The rescue that was the reason that Bay Hovercraft Rescue was formed!
On August 24th 1996, a man was trapped in Quicksand overnight and only rescued when 32 members of the emergency services managed to pull him out just as the tide was about to go over his head. Gary Parsons, a then serving Coastguard, awarded for bravery during this rescue decided there had to be a better way, and formed Bay Hovercraft Rescue, later to become Bay Search and Rescue.
A collection of photos of the Coastguard at Arnside, the people, press cuttings and some rescues on Morecambe Bay, with thanks to George Crossman, ex Station Officer, Arnside Coastguard for allowing us to show these.
